About The Issue

The village of Beulah, faces a crucial challenge – a failing sewer system in dire need of modernization. Years of neglect have led to a critical juncture, where inaction is no longer an option. The State of Michigan has mandated a complete overhaul of the system, leaving the village grappling with the financial burden of this essential upgrade.

A Looming Financial Burden for a Small Community:
The price tag for a new, state-of-the-art sewer system is substantial – a staggering $12.5 million. While a $2 million grant offers some relief, the remaining $10.5 million must be financed through a bond, placing a significant financial strain on Beulah's residents. This translates to an annual payment of $435,000 for the next 40 years, a hefty sum for a small community of just under 400 residents and businesses.

Challenges for Beulah's Residents and Businesses:
Many of Beulah's residents are retirees or individuals living on fixed or low incomes. The proposed sewer project would cause a significant rise in their quarterly bills, potentially exceeding $700, posing a serious affordability challenge. Local businesses, still reeling from the after effects of the Covid pandemic, would also face the strain of increased utility costs. This follows a recent water infrastructure upgrade that already doubled water bills, leaving many feeling the pinch.

Seeking Solutions and Support:
The village is actively seeking alternative solutions and appealing for support from government representatives and other entities. Securing additional funding through budget earmarks or grants would significantly alleviate the financial burden on residents and ensure the project's success.
